Turbulent Prandtl number from isotropically forced turbulence

چکیده

Turbulent motions enhance the diffusion of large-scale flows and temperature gradients. Such is often parameterized by coefficients turbulent viscosity ( $\nu _{t}$ ) thermal diffusivity $\chi that are analogous to their microscopic counterparts. We compute imposing sinusoidal velocity gradients on a flow measuring response system. also confirm our results using experiments where imposed allowed decay. To achieve this, we use weakly compressible three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations isotropically forced homogeneous turbulence. find diffusion, as well ratio Prandtl number, $\textit {Pr}_{t} = \nu _{t}/\chi , approach asymptotic values at sufficiently high Reynolds Péclet numbers. do not significant dependence {Pr}_{t}$ number {Pr} /\chi$ . These findings in stark contrast from $k{-}\epsilon$ model, which suggests increases monotonically with decreasing {Pr}$ The current relevant for ongoing debate on, example, nature very-low- regimes stellar convection zones.

On the turbulent Prandtl number in homogeneous stably stratified turbulence

In this paper, we derive a general relationship for the turbulent Prandtl number Pr t for homogeneous stably stratified turbulence from the turbulent kinetic energy and scalar variance equations. A formulation for the turbulent Prandtl number, Pr t , is developed in terms of a mixing length scale LM and an overturning length scale LE , the ratio of the mechanical (turbulent kinetic energy) deca...

The Turbulent Magnetic Prandtl Number of MHD Turbulence in Disks

The magnetic Prandtl number PrM is the ratio of viscosity to resistivity. In astrophysical disks the diffusion of angular momentum (viscosity) and magnetic fields (resistivity) are controlled by turbulence. Phenomenological models of the evolution of large scale poloidal magnetic fields in disks suggest that the turbulent magnetic Prandtl number PrM,T controls the rate of escape of vertical fie...

Turbulent magnetic Prandtl number and magnetic diffusivity quenching from simulations

Forced turbulence simulations are used to determine the turbulent kinematic viscosity, νt, from the decay rate of a large scale velocity field. Likewise, the turbulent magnetic diffusivity, ηt, is determined from the decay of a large scale magnetic field. In the kinematic regime, when the field is weak, the turbulent magnetic Prandtl number, νt/ηt, is about unity. When the field is nonhelical, ...

Two-loop calculation of the turbulent Prandtl number.

The turbulent Prandtl number has been calculated in the two-loop approximation of the epsilon expansion of the stochastic theory of turbulence. The strikingly small value obtained for the two-loop correction explains the good agreement of the earlier one-loop result with the experiment. This situation is drastically different from other available nontrivial two-loop results, which exhibit corre...

Turbulent Prandtl number effect on passive scalar advection

A generalization of Kraichnan’s model of passive scalar advection is considered. Physically motivated regularizations of the model are considered which take into account both the effects of viscosity and molecular diffusion. The balance between these two effects on the inertial range behavior for the scalar is shown to be parameterized by a new turbulent Prandtl number. Three different regimes ...
